Introduction to Cognitive Psychology & Cognitive Neuroscience

Cognitive psychology, as defined in my own words, is the study of human mental processes from the human-centric viewpoint. This viewpoint focuses on human perception and how humans think about and perceive mental processes, rather than from a physiological or philosophical standpoint. Cognitive psychology is a field of study dedicated to learning more about and discovering more about what makes human minds work and think.

Why is cognitive psychology important? Cognitive psychology is important because it studies human cognition, a key part of both human society and the day-to-day lives of human beings. Many of the experiences that human beings go through everyday can range from very simple to incredibly complex, and yet we become so used to them that it becomes commonplace and expected. Once we take the time to delve into these complex interactions and processes, however, we can find that the processes of cognition and human mental processes is a world unto itself and an amazing, fascinating and central system that is key to what makes the human-based world go round and round.

Cognitive psychology is so important because the ability to think, reason, and behave intelligently at a higher level than other species is what separates us. It is arguable that our ability to think, adapt, and survive is what truly sets apart. In addition, cognitive processes are key to daily existence for human beings. Cognitive processes affect our emotions, personalities, and relationships, all key things most would consider to being happy in life. It also affects our capabilities and what we can achieve. These are key to our lives of work and learning, leading to hopefully fulfilling lives and a way to survive and provide for ourselves and our loved ones. Lastly, cognitive processes our unique from person to person and they are what make each of us truly unique. These are all examples of why cognitive psychology is so important to study and dedicate research into.
